Walking to work
One of the best things about living in Budapest (or any other cool European city plus New York–my favorite place on Earth) is that I can walk just about anywhere. Everything I need is within a 15-minute walk of our apartment. And I love that I get to walk to work. No more sitting on a smelly bus with “all of God’s creatures” or driving in traffic for 30 minutes each way. I get to leave my apartment at 8:55 and arrive to work at 9:00. Here’s what I get to see as I walk:

The front door to our apartment building. 30 Raday Utca. It's not pronounced in any way you might think.

Next I take a walk through this park. Or more appropriately called The Trail of Dog Poo. Nine out of ten times I step on a land mine.

The man on the left is ALWAYS standing outside of this restaurant. He is there when I go to work and there when I walk home. I am now able to say "Szia" to him on each leg of the trip which, lucky for me, means both "hello" and "goodbye".

This is Ulloi Ut, one of the major thoroughfares here. Also one of the best intersections to get hit by dudes on mopeds driving on the sidewalks.

I get to pass by these signs every day. I think the lady in this photo accurately portrays my feelings about this.

Because they built this city before cars, they started allowing them to park on the sidewalks. So much for pedestrian-friendly streets.

One of my favorite buildings here. It's so friendly and bright compared to the dark gray buildings surrounding it.

The second intersection I cross. And the second-best place to end your life via moped mauling. My office will be coming up on the left hand side of the next block.

Here's the front of the building where I work. Many small companies rent units in residential apartment buildings here. Our office overlooks this square where, if we work late, we get to watch teeny-boppers drinking wine straight out of the bottle. Classy.

This church sits opposite my building. Its proximity to the drunk teenagers does not seem to be helping them make better life decisions.

The architects's room. They have to be separated from the landscape architects because if we were all together our collective egos wouldn't fit in the room.

Two of my new office mates, Arpi and Dorka. Notice how they are wearing the characteristic "designer black" and I stick out like a sore thumb in neon yellow.

This is Kati. She's sweet. And she's trying to act like she's working while I take her picture. Notice the clock on the wall. That's right, 8:10 PM on a Friday night. I thought escaping to Europe would allow me more free time. Look who's a sucker. But, if I'm lucky, when I leave tonight I will be greeted by a drunken Hungarian teenager.

Congrats on the job! Sounds, and looks like, a pretty rockin’ place. Looks like your building is a bright and pretty shade of yellow too… just like your sweater!
Thanks for the 5 minute tour.
One question though, what is that statue at in the square depicting?
Nice Ikea tables at the office, too.
Hope all is well!
Thanks, Javier! As far as the statue is concerned, I have no idea. I’m pretending that the guy on the top had a temper-tantrum and threw down the wreath and flag that his subordinates are picking up.
Love it! I like seeing where you are spending so much of your time. And you look pretty in your yellow.
